What are the signs a house needs rewiring?
A house rarely needs rewiring overnight; it tells you gradually. The clearest signs are a fuse box still fitted with old rewireable fuses rather than modern breakers, cabling that is rubber, fabric or lead-sheathed instead of modern PVC, and sockets that feel warm, look scorched or crackle when you use them. Add in too few sockets per room, lights that dim or flicker, and breakers that trip more and more often, and you are usually looking at an installation that has reached the end of its working life. Any one sign on its own may just need a repair; several together point to a rewire.
We see this constantly across our patch, from the Regency terraces around Montpellier and the Promenade to the post-war semis at Hesters Way, Up Hatherley and Benhall, and the older Victorian stock in Gloucester's Tredworth and Barton. Wiring installed sixty or seventy years ago was never designed for the demands of a modern home. Does an old fuse box mean I definitely need a rewire?
Not on its own. An old board can sometimes be upgraded while the cabling behind it is still sound. It is when the fuse box, the cables and the sockets are all of the same era that a rewire usually makes sense, and an EICR tells us which applies to your home.
Can I have a partial rewire instead of a full one?
Often yes. If only certain circuits are tired, we can rewire those and leave the sound ones alone. We inspect first and tell you honestly whether a partial rewire will do, rather than pricing the whole house by default.
How can I be sure before spending the money?
An EICR is the honest answer. It inspects and tests every accessible circuit and grades the condition, so you get a clear picture of what genuinely needs doing before you commit to anything.
